Elderly and disabled people are set to continue benefiting from a mobility scooter service – after a rescue funding package from Islington Council.

It was feared that the scheme, known as ScootAbility, could have reached the end of the road when Transport for London (TfL) ended its support.

But Islington Council is now proposing to stump up cash to keep the vital service running.

People who find it hard to get around can borrow the electric scooters for up to four days, to make journeys which would be too far to walk – but too short for a taxi trip.

Councillor John Gilbert, Islington Council's Executive Member for Health and Social Care, said: "These scooters provide real independence and a better quality of life for almost 200 people in Islington.

"It means our residents don't have to rely on family or carers, and they're not constrained by other forms of public transport.

"It's a really important service, which is why we feel it is vital to keep it running."

TfL funding for the ScootAbility service runs out next month.

The funding package is set to be agreed by Islington Council's Executive and Full Council next Thursday (February 28).

ENDS

For more information please call Chris Weeks on 020 7527 3032
