Makeover for park in the heart of Islington

Date: 12-Feb-08 by Chris Weeks

A popular park in the heart of Islington is set for a major makeover.

Duncan Terrace Gardens - near Angel town centre - will be transformed into a colourful oasis with new planting, footpaths, seats and more entrances.

It follows three years of detailed consultation with local people including doorstep interviews with residents, leaflet drops and events in the park.

The findings of the consultation were also fed back to residents.

Councillor Ruth Polling, Islington Council's Executive Member for Leisure and Equalities, said: "Duncan Terrace Gardens is a fantastic public space in the heart of our borough and these plans are a real opportunity to improve them and implement changes that many residents have been asking for.

"At the moment, many of the trees are growing into each other which blocks out daylight to the ground. The trees are competing against each other which is why the vast majority of residents and park users who responded to our consultation asked that they be thinned out.

"We are aware that not all residents supported the plans and we continue to work with them to address these concerns before any trees are removed but hope that everyone will get involved so we can create a park that the local community can be proud of."

The gardens will be closed from mid-March to July, but open again for the summer season.

Further works will be carried out in September and November, when the park will once again be closed for further planting works.

The new, improved gardens will fully re-open in December.

ENDS

For more information please call Chris Weeks on 020 7527 3032
