Employers across Islington have made a firm commitment to tackle unemployment in the borough. <br><br>Around 80 bosses gathered at the Town Hall, where many signed a pledge to offer more work experience and training – and to give local people more chance to compete for jobs. <br><br>Councillor James Kempton, Leader of Islington Council, said: "Over a quarter of working-age residents in Islington don't have a job. <br><br>"Being out of work is a huge issue and we need to take practical steps to connect more people to the job market. <br><br>"Many people want to work, but just can't find the right opportunities. If we can change that by working better with local employers, it will be a big step forward."<br><br>Islington Council and other organisations already run schemes which offer free adult training, a service connecting those looking for jobs or work experience with local employers, volunteering opportunities, and advice on how to start a business. <br><br>Margeret Scantlebury from Axeminster Road, Holloway, N7, has already benefited from such a scheme. <br><br>The 44-year-old apprentice carpenter said: "Around two years ago I was made redundant – but, instead of being negative about this, I saw it as a crossroads in my life and a real opportunity. <br><br>"I've always wanted to do something 'hands-on', so I signed up for work experience at a construction firm. <br><br>"One thing led to another, and I now have an apprenticeship. <br><br>"I'm also studying one day a week to learn new skills which will hopefully lead to the career I've always dreamed of."<br><br>Earlier this week, Islington Council hosted a business breakfast attended by key members of the business community, and chaired by prominent local businessman Paul Morris. <br><br>Islington has a significant proportion of young people, as well as people over 55, parents and disabled people who are not in work but who may be able to get a job given the right support and opportunities. <br><br>The council will now follow up commitments made by local businesses to tackle unemployment, and encourage other companies to make their own pledges – and use all available services to get more people ready for work, and to provide local employers with suitable candidates. <br><br>ENDS<br> <br>For more information please call Chris Weeks on 020 7527 3032
