HOME Secretary Jacqui Smith MP today sang the praises of Islington Council and police for their success in tackling alcohol-related crime and disorder.<br><br>She said the borough's work is "an example to us all" as she gave a high-profile briefing on alcohol misuse.<br><br>Earlier she toured the streets near Angel and met Islington Council's Deputy Leader Cllr Terry Stacy, council licensing officers and police.<br><br>Speaking at Islington's Business Design Centre, she thanked "those from Islington Council and police who have been leading the charge locally in the battle against alcohol-related crime."<br><br>She added: "I have been able to talk to some of the local team this morning and, most importantly, seen the strength of the partnership they have made and the difference they are making."<br><br>The Home Secretary also highlighted the council and police's close working relationship with local licensees.<br><br>"That work is really making a difference – seeing the impact that you are making is an example to us all," she added.<br><br>Cllr Terry Stacy said: "We are delighted with the Home Secretary's praise.<br><br>"Her choice of Islington for today's briefing is a vote of confidence in the council's work.<br><br>"Our partnership with the police and licensees is the key to the council's success in tackling alcohol-related anti-social behaviour.<br><br>"Most people come to Islington for a good night out, and are well-behaved and law-abiding. We won't let a trouble-making minority spoil that."<br><br>The council's close work with pubs, bars and clubs includes five Pubwatch schemes and the ongoing Best Bar None excellence scheme, which has 20 members.<br><br>
