Young birdwatchers flock to Islington's green spaces

Children from Islington were in for a real "tweat" – when they took part in the Big Schools' Birdwatch. <br><br>More than a thousand youngsters from 40 schools have been counting birds in the borough's parks and green spaces. <br><br>The event was organised by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), supported by Islington Council's Park Rangers.<br><br>Councillor Ursula Woolley, Islington Council's Executive Member for Children and Young People, said: "For an inner-city borough, we have a great deal of wildlife that we're rightly proud of. <br><br>"Children at our schools have told me how important looking after our local wildlife is for them, and it's great to see so many young people getting involved." <br><br>Ros Patching, RSPB Education Officer, said: "The Big Schools' Birdwatch provides an opportunity for thousands of children to join in and discover the birdlife within their local environment."<br><br>The event ran from 21 January to 1 February. <br><br>The Big Schools' Birdwatch is part of the world's biggest bird watching event; the RSPB's Big Garden Birdwatch. <br><br>ENDS<br><br>For more information please call Chris Weeks on 020 7527 3032 or 07825 098804. <br>
