Teachers and pupils at Islington Arts and Media School (IAMS) are celebrating after receiving a glowing report from their latest Ofsted inspection, which described it as 'a good and rapidly improving school with some outstanding features.'

Inspectors judged the school as 'good' overall, and the areas of 'care, guidance and support' and 'curriculum' were rated as 'outstanding'.

IAMS has made real progress between inspections, a fact that was cited in the report as being due largely to the 'inspirational leadership of the head teacher and his very able and committed senior team.' The quality of teaching in general was praised, with performing arts, mathematics and information and communication technology noted as being subjects that pupils attained particularly well in.

The report also concluded that the overall atmosphere of the school is harmonious and that students feel happy and safe in the school environment, as a result of the guidance and support they receive.

Richard Ewen, Head teacher of IAMS, said: "We are delighted that this latest Ofsted report recognises the school's improvements, achievements and determination to ensure security, continuity and creativity in the education we provide. We still need to focus on raising the literacy levels. But this is a real boost for the teachers, students, governors and parents who have worked so hard over the last year."

Cllr Ursula Woolley, Islington Council's Executive Member for Children and Young People, said: "IAMS has made real improvements and this report is a strong testament to that fact. This is the latest in a string of Ofsted reports which puts Islington schools well above the average for the quality of education they provide."
