Islington Council and EC1 New Deal for Communities have scooped a prestigious award for their role in transforming a public park in EC1.

Spa Fields in Finsbury was created in the 19th century, but had become dilapidated and many residents avoided it because they felt it was unsafe to use.

The park received a major redesign last year and now has improved landscaping, planting and seating, new areas for ball games and play, drinking fountains, picnic areas, new lighting and buildings.

This million-pound project was recognised at the London Planning Awards this week, where it was commended in the category for Best Community-based Planning Initiative.

Councillor Ruth Polling, Islington Council's Executive Member for Leisure and Equalities, said: "I'm delighted that Spa Fields has won this award which recognises the hard work the council, EC1 and local residents have put into improving it.

"Residents, particularly younger people, were at the heart of the project – which is exactly the right approach.

"This park is steeped in history and, thanks to a great deal of hard work, I'm delighted to see that so many people are enjoying it today."

Rebecca Cresswell, who lives in EC1, said: "In the past, the park was rather rundown and not a place that residents wanted to spend their time.

"I'm really pleased it's been transformed. It's now used by people picnicking and playing games – in fact, a whole host of different people are using it for different activities.

"There's also improved seating and really nice plants. It's a really attractive area for everyone."

Spa Fields was given Green Flag status in Spring 2007.
