Islington is preparing to play a key role in the forthcoming Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) History Month with the Town Hall hosting the opening event on Friday 1 February from 6 - 9pm.<br><br>A host of exciting and educational activities will follow throughout the month which is a part of a national event to celebrate the lives and achievements of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Transsexual community.<br><br>Research suggests Islington has one of the largest LGBT communities in the country and Islington Registrars Office has conducted 562 civil partnerships since 21 December 2005.<br><br>Islington has always been at the centre of London's LGBT history - from the first gay rights demonstration by Stonewall and the first "out" Mayor (Robert Crossman) to groundbreaking community organisations like the London Lesbian and Gay Switchboard and London Friend.<br><br>The events throughout February - arranged by Islington Council and partner organisations - will celebrate the past of the borough's LGBT community and look forward to a vibrant future.<br><br>Councillor Ruth Polling, Islington Council's Executive Member for Leisure and Equalities, said: "We've seen some of the major landmarks in the history of the LGBT community in Islington, so it's important we play a key role in this History Month. <br><br>"Islington LGBT History Month gives us all the opportunity to learn more about the history and significant contributions of the LGBT community in Islington and elsewehere. The LGBT community have been role models and achievers in so many ways, so this year's theme of 'Claiming our Past, Celebrating our Present and Creating our Future' aims to highlight this.<br><br>"There's a series of entertaining, educational and fun activities all month and everyone is welcome to pick up a copy of the programme. It's a celebration that I hope Islington's wider community will come together for and share with us."<br><br>Highlights of the opening event on 1 February include a performance from Europe's longest-established lesbian and gay community choir - The Pink Singers - who are celebrating 25 years in 2008.
