Islington Council just made recycling easier by installing five new recycling points especially for Tetrapak containers.

Tetrapak is used for packaging everything from fruit juice to milk to soup and accounts for much of the packaged food sold in supermarkets. But because of its unique three-layer construction (cardboard, foil and a waxed bonding coat) they are unsuitable for household recycling in normal green box and bag collections.

Islington Council now collects Tetrapak separately at bring sites via a special contractor which has the special plant facilities needed to reprocess them. This is the first time that residents have been able to recycle Tetrapak in Islington.

The five recycling points are at:

1) Household Reuse and Recycling Centre, Hornsey Street, N7
2) Outside Caxton House, St Johns Way, N19
3) Newington Green East Side, N16
4) Goswell Road Junction with Compton Street, EC1
5) Tolpuddle Street in Sainsbury's Car Park, N1

Cllr Lucy Watt, Executive Member for Environment, Islington Council said: "It's another way we are making it easier for residents to recycle and reduce the effect they have on the environment.

"Many Islington residents have told us they want us to expand the range of materials we recycle. Others want to make changes to live a greener lifestyle - that might include not buying overpackaged goods in the first place."

"Recycling a tetrapak carton or a plastic drinks bottle instead of throwing it in the rubbish saves enough energy to power a 60 watt bulb for six hours. With the climate debate we are now all having it's clear that recycling can decrease our carbon emissions."

Ends
