Islington Council formally open its newly built flagship home, Lennox House on 22 August, 2007. Lennox promises to raise the standards of care for the borough's vulnerable older people, including those with dementia. The home will have GP, dentist, hair dresser and chiropodist services on site. As well as being a permanent home for up to 80 people, it will help ease bed blocking by providing temporary care for people who have been in hospital and need non-medical care while they recover.

Cllr John Gilbert, Islington Council's Executive Member for Social Services, said: "Opening this home is a real achievement and great news for older Islington residents. Lennox provides care for older people with different needs - it's a permanent home for frail older people and provides temporary care for older people who were in hospital but need non medical care until they can look after themselves again. On the second and third floor, Lennox has a specialist care centre with nurses providing dedicated care for people with advanced dementia.

"It is the last of our care homes to be refurbished and its completion brings residential care in Islington closer to our vision for the kind of care we want for older people.

"Residents and their families were fully involved while we planned and carried out the work right up until people moved in. They decided what colours they wanted their rooms to be and we made sure we took account of the friendships people had formed when we allocated rooms."

Central to care at Lennox House will be Activity Based Care, a philosophy of care that aims to encourage residents to stay as independent as possible and maintain the skills important to everyday living, while building confidence.

On site nurses and care staff will ensure round the clock care for people who need it and a cook has been employed to provide residents, both temporary and permanent, with a choice of well balanced nutritious meals. Staff at the new home have started organising regular activities for the more active residents to take part in like gardening, and for those with a creative flare, painting.

Lennox House is a four-storey building that was fully rebuilt in the spring this year. The home is registered with the Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCI).

Tony Weedon, Projects Director from Care UK, which will run the home, commented: "We are delighted that our investment in Lennox House is being so well received by our residents, their families and friends, and our professional colleagues in the Borough. It will be good to see our residents benefiting from our innovative and unique Activity Based Approach to their care, reclaiming their independence step by step. We are grateful to Islington Borough Council for its continuing support, and we look forward to working closely with them to provide first class care for elderly, vulnerable citizens in the area."

Ends
