Key Stage 2 (KS2) results for primary schools pupils, out today (Tuesday 7 August), show that Islington schools are improving far faster than the national rate.

Nationally, results in English, maths and science improved by only one per cent -- but Islington's improvement was six times better than that in maths and science, and three times better in English. Islington is also one of the top 15 Local Authorities in England that have seen their results improve the most between 2006 and 2007.

Cllr Ursula Woolley, Islington Council's Executive Member for Children and Young People, said: "These results prove that there is excellent teaching and learning in Islington's schools, far outstripping the national picture, and that's great news for Islington families. Ofsted inspection results back this up by consistently rating our schools as good or outstanding -- again, significantly beating the national trend. We are transforming Islington schools and the best is yet to come, as we begin our multi-million pound school improvement programme."

Year 6 pupils take Key Stage 2 tests during their final year at primary school, when are 11 years old. By this point, pupils are expected to achieve at least Level 4 in English, maths and science.

Since 2003, the percentage of Islington pupils gaining Level 4 or more has been steadily increasing -- and often at a faster rate than nationally, as 2007 demonstrates.
