Cash available for community groups' learning

Islington Council is calling on voluntary and community organisations to apply for their share of a £420,000 grant for adult and community learning.<br><br>The new scheme aims to provide services aimed at raising the self-esteem, confidence and educational attainment of young black and minority ethnic people in Islington. <br><br>The Mother Tongue and Supplementary Schools (MTSS) project will see Islington Council commission the services for the next three years. <br><br>Applications are encouraged from local groups that support black and ethnic minority communities in educational achievement, in particular young people from the following ethnic groups: Turkish/Kurdish, Somali, Black African/Caribbean and Bengali. <br><br>The MTSS project will support the council's existing programme to boost literacy and numeracy in schools.<br><br>Cllr John Gilbert, Executive Member for Adult Social Services, Islington Council, said: "Islington has an incredibly diverse community with over 100 languages spoken.<br><br>"The council is committed to supporting this diversity especially when it comes to improving the performance of young black and minority ethnic children at school. <br><br>"The grant scheme continues the good partnership work we already do in this area by working with mainstream schools alongside local voluntary and community groups."<br><br>To find out more about the grants available or to make an application, please contact Adult and Community Learning on 020 7527 5782. <br><br>Ends<br>
