Let's end the uncertainty for Islington Green pupils

Date: 13-Apr-07 by susie rundle

Islington Council, The City University, London and the City of London Corporation have today published revised admissions criteria for the new City of London Academy in Islington.

The new admissions criteria will be based on distance from home to school and are in line with the public consultation and the policy that currently applies at Islington Green School.

Cllr Ursula Woolley, Islington Council's Executive Member for Children and Young People, said: "The most important thing for the council and the Academy's sponsors is to raise attainment and create an excellent school for local young people. More than anything else Islington Green needs an end to uncertainty. It is essential in the interests of current pupils in particular, but also future pupils, to ensure there is no unnecessary delay to the new academy.

"We call on the NUT to withdraw from legal action that will only serve to delay the opening of the new school and prolong uncertainty for existing pupils.

"St Mary Magdalene Academy, which opens this September, has been more heavily oversubscribed than any Islington school in recent memory. This is yet more evidence, if it were needed, that local parents want the council to secure more resources and excellent local schools for the borough's children."

ENDS
