Date: 03-Apr-07 by verity cork

Islington Council's hard-working Adoption Service received special thanks from Mayor Jyoti Vaja for their dedication to children and adults whose lives are touched by adoption.

The Mayor received a tour of the service. She heard real-life stories about children and adults brought together to form loving new families through adoption and long-term fostering. The Adoption Support Service talked about how their work is leading the way in providing better support services (including financial, emotional and therapeutic support) for new adoptive families, birth families and adults who were adopted as children.

Adoption is the way in which children who cannot be brought up by their own parents become a permanent member of a new family. Adoption transfers all legal rights and responsibilities for the child from the birth parents to the adoptive parents, and is a serious, lifelong commitment to provide a child with a new family and a safe, secure future.

Last year Islington successfully arranged 33 adoptions, but there are still many children in need of a loving adoptive home. These children come from a variety of ethnic and religious backgrounds, and all of them are looking for happy homes. The children range from babies to school-age, with some needing to be placed with their brothers and sisters.

There will be an information sessions for people interested in adoption on Wednesday 11 April, 16 May and Thursday 21 June, all from 6.30-8pm at The Elthorne Centre, Archway, London, N19 4AZ.

Anyone interested in adoption should contact the Adoption Service on 0800 073 3344 or email adoption@islington.gov.uk.

Ends
