Islington Council

Pedestrian paradise for Farringdon Station

Date: 02-Apr-07 by charles dean

Islington Council is transforming the area immediately outside Farringdon Station into a pedestrian and cycle-friendly zone after consultation showed overwhelming support from residents, commuters and local businesses last year.

Work started on Saturday 17 March 2007 and is expected to be completed by May 2007.

Cllr Lucy Watt, Executive Member for Environment, Islington Council said: "We have listened to what local residents, commuters, businesses and emergency services said during our consultation last year. Now we are acting to deliver a
much cleaner, safer and more attractive environment for the thousands of people who use the station each day."

The street improvements aim to create a more attractive, safe and pedestrian friendly surface that will make the station and Cowcross Street more accessible to the public and emergency services.

An estimated 19 million people use Farringdon Station each year, which makes it the second busiest station in Islington after Finsbury Park. The small, narrow footpath outside the station means pedestrians currently spill onto the road, endangering themselves and other road users.

Phase one of the scheme will create a pedestrian area outside the station. Two-way traffic into the NCP car park on Cowcross Street will remain.

Phase two, will raise the area between the station and Farringdon Road, increasing the northern footway width while still allowing two-way traffic to the NCP car park. It is hoped this will be complete by June 2007.

ENDS
