A new Islington Council door-knocking campaign is encouraging residents to recycle even more as Islington Council announced this week that household recycling reached an all time high of 26 per cent in January.

Uniformed staff will be visiting homes on estates and flats above shops to promote recycling and remind people of the council's extensive doorstep recycling collection services.

Cllr Lucy Watt, Executive Member for Environment, Islington Council said: "Residents are making a huge difference to the amount we recycle - reducing the amount of material we send to landfill.

"But not everyone recycles everything they could. We see education as key to making real and sustainable change to people's behaviour. So I'm delighted that this campaign - like our recycling service - is bringing the green message quite literally to people's doorsteps.

"With recycling made this easy, there's really no excuse not to do your bit.

"Islington's recycling rate hit an all time high of 26per cent in January 2007 - we're doing more than many other London boroughs to be cleaner and greener."

Local resident Jenna-Lee Anderson of Highbury N5, said: "It was really informative to talk to someone about recycling. Although I recycle quite a lot it's great to have an expert on hand to tell me what else I can recycle and give me some other ideas on how to reduce the amount of rubbish I throw away."

Islington had the fastest improving recycling rate of any London borough in 2005/6. The increase was due to the council expanding and improving recycling services for kitchen and green waste, extendingservices to estates, student halls of residence and flats above shops.

ENDS
