Date: 26-Feb-07 by verity cork

People affected by cancer can now turn to their local library to find out more about the disease and what support is available to them.

Islington and Camden Councils have teamed up with Macmillan Cancer Support and the North London Cancer Network to provide better information about the disease and how to cope with it.

Library visitors will be able to borrow more books about common cancers, complementary therapies and the emotional impact of the disease. They will also be able to find out more about support and advice services available in their area, whether for help with applying for a benefit application, details of local support groups or information about how to apply for a disabled parking badge.

Macmillan Cancer Support gave £4000 to the project to buy new books and, together with the North London Cancer Network, trained library staff in cancer awareness and cancer information.

Cllr George Allan, Islington Council's Executive Member for Customer Focus, said: "Many people will be affected by cancer at some time in their lives, whether because a family member develops the disease or they develop it themselves. Being able to access good up to date information about cancer and the support services available is vital to helping people through it. This will prove an invaluable resource to many people."

The new books are available from selected libraries in Islington and Camden.
