Islington's council tax to remain among the lowest in London

Date: 20-Feb-07 by susie rundle

Islington's council tax looks set to remain among the lowest in London, if councillors give the green light to tax proposals published today.

If approved, Islington residents on Band D council tax are likely to end up paying about £80 less than their neighbours in Camden and in Hackney, and £200 less than neighbours in Haringey.

Following last year's freeze, the proposal is for yet another low increase - of just 1.5 per cent - for this year, offering residents good services and value for money.

The proposal for this year's council tax is set out in a report, published today on www.islington.gov.uk for discussion at next Tuesday's meetings of the Executive and Full Council (27 February).

Cllr Andrew Cornwell, Executive Member for Finance, Islington Council said: "We're proposing yet another low increase at 1.5 per cent to keep Islington's council tax below the London average.

"Of the proposed rises we know so far, we believe our increase is one of the lowest anywhere in the Capital. We understand at least 21 London boroughs, plus the Greater London Authority (GLA), are currently recommending higher increases. All bar two of these are more than double our increase."

"Depending on the final increases agreed, Islington residents on Band D Council tax are likely to end up paying about £80 less than their neighbours in Camden and Hackney, and £200 less than neighbours in Haringey. And Islington's increase of 1.5 per cent compares to the GLA increase of 5.3 per cent.

"We are able to keep delivering low increases thanks to the good progress we have made in efficiency savings - we're on track to save £8 million this year by cutting out waste, better use of IT and more efficient purchasing - offering residents good value for money."

ENDS
