Islington Council representatives recently visited St James' Palace to receive the borough's licence to run the Duke of Edinburgh's Award. The Duke of Edinburgh himself presented the licence to Cllr Woolley and members of Islington's Young People's Services.

Cllr Woolley, Executive Member for Children and Young People, said: "This is great news for all young people aged 14-25 who live, work or study in Islington -- and for the wider community. The Duke of Edinburgh's Award encourages young people to learn all sorts of new skills, to help others and to experience adventure. I know many young people at our schools and youth centres will want to take on this challenge and will have a great time taking part."

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award is taken at Bronze, Silver or Gold level. Participants complete activities in four sections -- Service, Skills, Physical Recreation and Expeditions.

The awards also give the community a chance to get involved with Islington's young people, by providing suitable activities. For instance, to complete the service section, young people could work with local voluntary groups helping older people, animal welfare or children in the borough. Projects involved with activities such as sports, drama, arts and dance can also work with the young people.

There are currently around 65 young people taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award in Islington.

For more information about the Duke of Edinburgh's Award in Islington, contact Fotene Georgiou on 020 7527 5594, or email fotene.georgiou@islington.gov.uk.
