Not since the 1970s craze inspired by Noel Edmonds' Multi-Coloured Swap Shop 70s has Islington seen anything like it.

A new service - where you can swap games, toys, household equipment and even your house - is getting more visitors every month. Islington went Swapxchange mad in January 2007 with over 1,500 people visiting the website (www.islington.gov.uk/swapxchange) - many with surprisingly successful results.

For the first time, two houses were swapped on the website in the month of January. Not all swaps are of such magnitude though. A toaster was swapped for a bottle of real ale.

Cllr Lucy Watt, Deputy Leader and Executive Member for Environment, Islington Council said:"The site is an internet phenomenon - with more people logging on each week as news spreads of the things you can find on there.

"It's found a new home for loads of things which might ordinarily have gone to landfill and it's put Islington Council squarely on the cyberspace map."

The Swapxchange, which opened in November 2005, has now had more than 14,000 visitors with over 14 tonnes of items being swapped using the site.
