Islington Council

Arsenal blue badge enforcement update

Date: 21-Dec-06 by charles dean

Islington Council and the Metropolitan Police Service will be out in force at forthcoming Arsenal home games to stop the abuse of blue badges which can deny bona fide disabled drivers or their carers a legitimate parking space.

The council's dedicated blue badge parking fraud team will be patrolling the streets around Emirates Stadium on 23 December when the team faces Blackburn. The police will use the council's mobile CCTV van to help identify illegal blue badge holders.

Vehicles displaying illegal blue badges will be clamped, and Arsenal Football Club may take further action against supporters.

The disabled blue badge scheme is designed to help the mobility-impaired to park more easily. Despite several successful prosecutions against those who have used bogus blue badges, this type of fraud continues to be a problem.

Cllr Lucy Watt, Executive Member for Environment, Islington Council said: "We have listened to people who have told us that they want to see more action taken against people who fraudulently use blue badges.

"We've done this with crackdowns on illegal users all over the borough so disabled people can park more easily and we can achieve our sustainable transport policy."

The Emirates Stadium has over 100 dedicated disabled parking spaces under the stadium for the exclusive use of mobility- impaired supporters.

To reserve a parking space please contact Alun Francis or Caroline Lemmon on 020 7704 4490 or email disability@arsenal.co.uk. Alternatively download an application form from the disabled supporters information on www.arsenal.com.
