From Islington with Love - Civil Partnerships booming one year on

Date: 13-Dec-06 by charles dean

Next Thursday, 21 December 2006 marks the first anniversary of the introduction of civil partnerships and the London Borough of Islington continues to be the first choice for couples wanting to tie the knot in the Capital.

One year on, Islington has performed over 600 civil partnership ceremonies - uniting many happy couples. And over 20 per cent of the couples choosing Islington for their civil partnership were residents of other local authorities, coming from near and far for the perfect London ceremony.

Cllr Terry Stacy, Executive Member for Housing and Communities, Islington Council said: "The last 12 months have proved the success of civil partnerships. Islington Town Hall has truly turned 'pink' with couples coming to Islington from as far as Devon and Gloucestershire to tie the knot.

"I am sure our unique London location and exceptional service will continue to make us the top choice for couples wanting a stylish ceremony in the Capital."

Islington has excellent transport connections, a wide selection of venues for celebrations as well as celebrity and royal associations.

Islington's grand Town Hall on Upper Street has become the place to see and be seen in. Actor, writer and broadcaster Sir Anthony Sher and his partner Royal Shakespeare Company Director Greg Doran were among the first to have their civil partnership ceremony at Islington Town Hall in 2005.

The listed building - dating from the 1920s - provides the perfect backdrop for couples on their special day and includes three different, sumptuous rooms for the most stylish London civil partnership.

The ultimate in choice, the borough of Islington and the City of London are also home to numerous other incredible buildings, many of which have been approved for wedding and civil partnership ceremonies.

Feedback from couples suggests they choose Islington Town Hall for their ceremony because of the personal service they receive, ensuring their day reflects their wishes, down to the very last detail. Islington Council is the first local authority to provide a webcam and DVD service. Couples can enjoy their union with friends and family around the world watching online, if they can't be there in person. In addition, the service can be recorded on DVD as a lasting memento of their special day.
