Road Safety Message - Don't Drink and Drive this Christmas

Date: 07-Dec-06 by charles dean

Islington Council is advising people not to drink and drive this Christmas and is suggesting some alcohol-free alternatives to the traditional happy hour.

In a joint poster campaign with the police, bus shelter posters will carry the message "If you're having a drink this Christmas leave the car at home".

Islington Council has sent the borough's 1000 plus licensees the same posters and is distributing drink-drive fact pacts.

Residents can also collect non-alcoholic cocktail recipes this party season for those driving home.

And staff and councillors will be out and about in the borough in the run-up to Christmas, driving home the drink-drive message while giving a taster of some seasonal refreshments.

Seasonal shoppers can visit the council's information stand at N1 Centre, Angel, on Saturday 9 December and also at Chapel Market at lunchtime on 19 December where Cllr Lucy Watt and Mayor Jyoti Vaja will be handing out fact packs, non-alcoholic cocktails, recipes and mince pies.

Cllr Lucy Watt, Executive Member for Environment, Islington Council, said:

"Many people want to get out and enjoy the party season but that doesn't always mean having to drink alcohol. Non-alcoholic cocktails are a safe and fun alternative.

"If you are drinking alcohol, there's no excuse for not leaving the car at home. Islington is a compact borough and well served by public transport. Please don't risk ruining someone else's Christmas."

Non-alcoholic cocktail recipes can be found on the Islington Council website - www.islington.gov.uk - with links from the homepage.
