Date: 01-Dec-06 by margery peddie

Cllr Marisha Ray, Executive Member for Performance and Community Safety, spent a morning with council staff installing the first steel pole to which one of the 30 new CCTV cameras will soon be fitted. The pole was placed in Rosoman Street EC1 on 1 December 2006.

Cllr Marisha Ray said: "Over the last couple of months our cameras have picked up more than 100 incidents, which we have shared with the police. We believe that the new cameras will be just as effective in the fight against crime and help make people feel safer too."

Islington Council is spending about £1m installing the 30 new CCTV cameras at sites across the borough to help tackle crime and anti social behaviour. Eighteen of the cameras are being placed at sites including Holloway, Angel and Archway on the recommendation of the police.

The Multi Agency Area Geographical Panels (MAGPIs) allocated the remaining 12 cameras with the full agreement of members. MAGPIs are made up of police officers, park rangers, youth workers, town centre managers, representatives from Connexions and housing providers.
