Double Green Apple joy for Islington's street services

Date: 22-Nov-06 by charles dean

Street Management has won a double at the Green Apple awards with both the 'i-recycle centre' and the 'Schools Environmental Project' winning top awards at the Tower of London on Friday 3 November. The Green Apple campaign is now in its twelfth year - recognising, rewarding and promoting environmental best practice and initiatives.

Islington's Schools Environmental Project (SEP) run by the Road Safety and Special Projects Team won the top award for 'Green Champion for the London region'. The i-recycle centre won a Chartered Institute of Waste Management Gold Award for Local Authorities. This is the second award this year for Islington's innovative i-recycle centre, having scooped Best Educational Project at this years Valpak Awards.

Environmentalist David Bellamy helped present the awards and two broad-leafed trees were planted on behalf of LBI to celebrate their attendance at the Green Apple Prizegiving Ceremony.

The SEP was originally funded by the A1 Borough Project and will continue until 2008 after securing further funding from Islington Strategic Partnership Environmental and Sustainability Theme Group.

This year, the SEP will work with 15 primary schools and deliver a programme of activities that will raise awareness amongst pupils, their families, teachers and other school staff about how their behaviour and lifestyles affect the environment.

These awards both recognise the tireless work of the council's Street Management team in making the borough cleaner, greener and safer.
