Islington Council's West Area Committee has set up a Community Chest Sub-Committee to allocate £80,000 for community, regeneration or environmental projects. The aim is to ensure that the money reaches small groups.
The West Area Community Chest will distribute the money to local projects in Barnsbury, Caledonian, Holloway and St Mary's wards before the end of March 2007. Applications must be in by 8 December 2006 to be considered at the Sub-Committee's meeting on the 18 December.
The fund aims to promote community participation and contribute to local regeneration and is open to voluntary organisations, community groups and residents groups. One-off grants will be given to individual projects, for events or purchases of equipment but not to individuals or to fund salaries.
Cllr Barry Edwards, Chair of West Area Committee, said:
"It's about making a difference to some of the smaller groups who might not have picked up on other funding opportunities.
"Applications are encouraged from any part of the community - young or old.
"But you've got to get your application in soon to have the best chance."
