Hundreds of year six pupils from across the borough have taken part in a series of fun and informative workshops run by Islington Council's environmental health officers for Junior Citizen Week, 13-17 November 2006.
One of the children's favourite activities has been learning the importance of cleaning hands. A combination of ultra-violet light technology and a healthy imagination has helped the children see how germs work and spread. They have then practised the correct technique for washing their hands properly.
Cllr George Allan, Executive Member for Customer Focus Islington Council said: "Cleaning your hands thoroughly with soap and water is the most effective way of reducing bacteria and preventing food poisoning in the home. Teaching children is a great way to get the message to parents."
Other workshops have been run with the council's partners - including the Fire Brigade, the Police, Primary Care Trust and Transport For London - teaching a range of life skills that help prepare young people for their transition into the adult world.
Islington Council is offering free visits to community or voluntary group to demonstrate the cleaner hands initiative. Please contact: michelle.webb@islington.gov.uk or call 0207 527 3816.
