Lewis Carroll Children's Library looks to the future

Date: 21-Nov-06 by verity cork

Lewis Carroll Children's Library is moving into temporary premises in December, taking the first step on the path to a new home in a bigger, brighter and better-equipped building.

The library will move into a temporary building next to Dunoon House, on the Bemerton Estate, until the new library is ready to open in summer 2008. The library's last day in its current building will be Friday 1 December and the temporary library will open on Monday 4 December.

The temporary library will still provide all Lewis Carroll Library's normal range of services, and visits by schools and under-5s will carry on.

The permanent new library will be a glass fronted modern building facing out onto Copenhagen Street. It will be almost double the size of the old library, which means there will be more books, better IT facilities and improved activity space.

Cllr George Allan, Executive Member for Customer Focus Ilsington Council, said "Lewis Carroll Children's Library has been a great asset to the local community since it opened in 1955. I know I'm not the only one looking forward to the library moving into its new building in 2008."

The vacated library premises in Naish Court will be knocked down as part of redevelopment works on the estate.

The new library and the temporary site are being provided as part of the council's planning agreement with the developers of the Bemerton Estate. They will also provide £50,000 for equipment and fittings, as well as funding landscaping in the area of both the temporary and permanent libraries.
