Islington Council wants local people to have their say on plans for a new academy, by taking part in a six-week public consultation starting today (Thursday 9 December).
The proposal is to replace Islington Green Community School with a new academy for pupils aged 11-19, on the same site in Prebend Street, N1. The academy would be sponsored by City University, London, and the City of London Corporation. It would be called City of London Academy Islington.
The council today published a 'statutory notice' letting people know about the proposals. This marks the start of the consultation and can be viewed along with more information about the academy, also published today, on the council's website, www.islington.gov.uk, at http://pubweb/Education/education_whatsnew.asp.
Cllr Ursula Woolley, Executive Member for Children and Services, Islington Council said: "When we asked people for their views on an academy at Islington Green, they told us they wanted us to make sure that young people from Islington would be the first to benefit.
"We listened to this, and we've acted on it. We've successfully negotiated to ensure that the admissions system prioritises young people from Islington rather than neighbouring boroughs.
"I believe this academy is a real opportunity to raise educational standards in Islington, and give young people from this borough the best chance of achieving their full potential.
"Islington Green School has made considerable progress in recent years and everyone involved should be proud of that. I want the new academy to build on that progress."
The council waited until the funding agreement was finalised before publishing the statutory notice, so people would have as much information about the academy as possible during the consultation period.
People now have six weeks to comment on the plans. Anyone who wants to should put their views in writing and send to Paul Curran, Director of Children's Services, Laycock Street, London, N1 1TH. All letters must arrive no later than December 21
