Islington Council is inviting people to take a minute to vote for their favourite photo in a competition to promote the use of public transport in the borough.

More than half of Islington's residents travel to work by public transport and this number is expected to grow as the public transport network improves in the run up to the London Olympics in 2012.

Cllr Lucy Watt, Executive Member for Environment: "60% of us in Islington don't own cars either for environmental reasons or cost.

"The public transport system here is extensive and easy to use but much of the traffic on our roads is still private cars contributing to congestion and poor air quality.

"This is why we want more people to consider leaving their cars at home and jumping on the bus to go to the shops, or taking the tube to visit a friend. It is up to all of us to make Islington a greener place."

So, during Sustainable Transport Week in September, the council invited budding photographers from across the borough to send in photos representing what they like about public transport.

Eight photos have been shortlisted and will be on show at the N1 Centre (east entrance near Monsoon) every lunchtime from Monday 13 to Friday 17 November.

All finalists will receive a pre-charged Oyster Card and the winning photographer will be awarded a Canon EOS 30D camera worth £1,000 - so they can continue to snap more of the borough.
