Islington Council

Hillrise East CPZ consultation

Date: 30-Oct-06 by charles dean

The last area of Islington without any parking controls is to be re-consulted this week on the introduction of a Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ).

Residents and local businesses in the Hillrise East area will be asked if they support a CPZ which prioritises parking for residents and local businesses.

The council first consulted local people on the parking controls in February 2005. At that time proposals were rejected. Since then, problems with overspill and commuter parking have caused difficulties for many in Hillrise East with demands from some to be re-consulted on a CPZ.

Local businesses have told the council that their customers find it very difficult to park which is severely affecting their trade.

In a CPZ, parking is allowed during its hours of operation with a resident or a business permit, a visitors' voucher or in pay and display spaces. This means commuters cannot leave their cars there all day and people outside the area will not be able to park there indefinitely.

The council is holding two drop-in sessions where residents and traders can discuss their ideas with council staff. These are being held 12 noon - 3pm on Saturday 4 November and 5pm - 8pm on Thursday 9 November at the Hanley Crouch Community Association, The Laundry, Sparsholt Road, London N19 4EL.

The closing date for returning completed questionnaires is Friday 17 November and the results of the consultation will be reported to the North Area Committee on January 8 2007 at the Postgraduate Lecture Theatre, Holborn Union Building, Archway Campus, Highgate Hill, N19 5LW.

Cllr Lucy Watt, Islington Council's Executive Member for Environment, said: "We want to listen to people's views - so it is important that as many as possible respond to this consultation which gives people the chance to tell us what they want.

"Islington attracts lots of visitors who now park in the few remaining streets without a CPZ and people there have told us they are fed up with the difficulty of finding a parking space.

"If people take a few minutes to fill in the questionnaire or attend one of the drop-in events we will know their views. It's important we get it right - residents and businesses will be living with the consequences."
