Date: 12-Oct-06 by charles dean

Islington Council is inviting residents young and old to join in the celebrations for Diwali at Islington Ecology Centre this Sunday 15 October, 2pm - 4pm.

It will be the fourth year the centre hosts the sights, sounds and smells of this Hindu festival within the green surroundings of Gillespie Park, N5 - which is also home to the Nature This year, visitors will be able to enjoy authentic Diwali foods and take part in traditional dance and henna tattoo (mehindi) demonstrations.

And because it is the Festival of Light, there will the opportunity to create and decorate unique Diwali lanterns made of sustainable willow and paper.

Cllr Lucy Watt, Deputy Leader, Islington Council, said:

"Events like this in our parks and open spaces are about bringing communities together. Diwali is not just a celebration for the Hindu community but for everyone.

Islington is proud of its diversity and these celebrations offer an exciting way to learn more about a different culture."
