The A1 corridor is set to be free of large outdoor adverts and illegal estate agent boards within the next two years.
Islington Council is aiming to remove 61 advertising hoardings from along the A1 from Goswell Road to Archway which are either dangerous or blight the appearance of buildings. The majority have been put up illegally.
The council has already succeeded in getting 32 of the hoardings removed by enforcement action. The remaining 29 are the subject of ongoing enforcement action and legal proceedings.
In addition, smaller illegal advertisements - such as estate agent placards - will also be coming down. The council has removed 95 displays with a similar number removed by the advertisers.
Cllr Lucy Watt, Executive Member for the Environment, said: "It's another local community inspired initiative
as part of the A1 Borough project - bringing people together around shared concerns and improving the environment for everyone.
"It'll certainly make a huge improvement to the look of the borough's main arterial road and be noticed by the thousands of people who use it each day, whether they are living or working in Islington or just visiting.
"And it will show illegal advertisers that they cannot get away with putting these signs up in the first place."
