Islington Council's i-recycle centre has won the Best Educational Project category at a prestigious national awards ceremony for the waste and recycling industry.
The Valpak Awards 2006 selected the innovative environmental education centre based at the Household Waste and Recycling Centre (HWRC) on Cottage Road, N7, for its interactive displays, games and videos that make learning fun. The facilities help young people and adults learn about recycling and waste issues.
The i-recycle centre is made entirely of recycled or sustainable material. Chairs and table-tops are made from recycled industrial chopping boards, puzzle games are made of plastic bottles and Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) approved wood has been used.
The centre offers free curriculum-linked workshops to Islington schools, one-off sessions for community groups and open days for local residents. And for the first time, schools across London can visit.
Other boroughs have already approached Islington Council to find out how to replicate its success.
Lucy Watt, Executive Member for Environment, Islington Council said: "The i-recycle centre is a wonderful learning resource for Islington and it's great to see this recognised by a national award.
"The response from children visiting the centre is great - their enthusiasm for recycling is inspirational.
"We've made an investment for future generations to make sure they understand the impact of their waste and the value of recycling."
In commending Islington's facility, the Valpak Awards judges identified it as the first of its kind in the country.
