Kids drive home the green message

Date: 05-Oct-06 by charles dean

Andrew Pozniak, aged 11, and Jordan Barker, aged 10, are driving home the council's green message after winning electric model sports cars.

The prizes were won in a competition to promote electric powered cars at the Imagine Islington event on 2 September where the council showed how it is helping reduce pollution emissions by converting its vehicle fleet to run on greener fuels such as electricity and liquid petroleum gas (LPG).

Jordan Barker, who won an electric model Aston Martin, said "I had such a good day at Imagine Islington. I learnt lots of different stuff about the environment, green travel and how the car you drive can make a difference to the environment."

Lucy Watt, Executive Member for Environment, Islington Council said "Greening the Islington fleet is the first and most pro-active step we can take to reducing harmful vehicle emissions in the borough.

Not only does it benefit everyone's health through improved air quality but green fuels combat global warming on a larger scale. It's more cost effective too, because of the tax and congestion charge concessions.

Events like Imagine Islington and facilities like our i-recycle centre are important in teaching a new generation about greener liefestyles and safeguarding their futures, too."

Islington Council's green fleet includes:

· 48 dual fuel LPG cars and car-derived vans
· a number of larger vans currently being converted to run on LPG
· 12 Oxygen and EVT electric scooters
· one electric tricycle
· 3 G-Wiz electric cars
· 1 electric van
· Islington has a hybrid-electric programme
· 3 Toyota Prius's and
· other alternative-fuelled vehicles
