Islington residents urged to go greener and Car Free

Date: 20-Sep-06 by charles dean

Islington residents are being urged to ditch the car and go greener by using alternative forms of transport during Good Going Week, 17 - 23 September 2006.

A whole host of activities have been planned for the week, which aims to encourage greener travel alternatives in London and in so doing, reduce traffic congestion and vehicle emissions.

Good Going Week is part of a London-wide campaign to encourage everyone to walk, cycle or use public transport instead of the car.

Cllr Lucy Watt, Executive Member for Environment, said "The activities taking place during Good Going Week are a great example of how we can all play our part to improve the environment.

"Islington Council is committed to encouraging people to use sustainable transport. We offer a number of services and incentives to get people walking, cycling or public transport."

Islington Council formally adopted its own travel plan in April this year. The aim is to promote alternatives to the car for council staff and visitors making trips to and from council premises, and to promote the use of greener vehicles for those delivering council services.

The events taking place during Good Going Week are:

National Walking Day - 17 September
To celebrate walking and the buildings of Islington, residents are encouraged to take a walk around Islington's open houses.

Cycle to Work Day - 19 September
Cyclists will have the opportunity to have their bikes checked at the corner of Goswell and City Roads from 08.00am to 10.00am, where there will be free breakfast and giveaways for all.

Car Free Day - 22 September
A car free fiesta will be held outside Farringdon Station. Parking bays along Cowcross Street will be transformed into traffic- free spaces for the day to show people what our lives would be like without cars. Everyone is welcome to attend and there's a free draw for an ipod nano.

Competitions and incentives:

1. Public Transport Photography Competition - show what you love about public transport and win a new Canon camera.

2. Walk to work competition - three ipod nanos are up for offer for those who walk 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week.
