Young people frequenting Islington's White Lion Centre are no strangers to varied events with an emphasis on fun and support - and the recent Health Day was no exception to the rule.
Inside, young people could find out how much they weigh, what their body fat level is, or pick up advice on sexual health and drugs awareness. Outside, entertainment came in the form of a very popular surf simulator and graffiti art.
One of the many enthusiastic visitors to the Health Day was 18 year-old Hassan Gray, who is a regular face at the White Lion Centre. He said: "I come here loads, it's brilliant. Like today - there's stuff to learn and find out about, as well as fun stuff and friends. Everyone's really welcoming and supportive."
Welcoming visitors to the Health Day - and handing out a health quiz for a mystery prize - was 18-year-old Chantelle West, who has been volunteering at the centre for about a month. She said: "Coming here as a volunteer has been great. I enjoy it not only because I'm helping the younger kids who come along, but because I'm also helping myself. I really want to find a job working with children, and since starting here I've got onto a course that will help me get an NVQ".
Cllr Ursula Woolley, Executive Member for Children's Services said: "We want young people in Islington to avoid health traps like obesity which are now at an all time high in the UK. Health days like this one at the White Lion Centre give our young people help and support with healthy eating and ways of staying fit, at a venue which is a good place to come with inspiring staff and mentors."
The White Lion Centre is for young people aged between 12 and 21. Islington Council's Young People's Services manage the centre, which includes a local Connexions careers and information service and a health advice service. The centre offers a wide range of activities, facilities, events, learning opportunities and advice. To find out more, call the White Lion Centre on 020 7527 7077 or email whitelionproj@hotmail.com.
