Islington Scooter Scheme Tops Oyster Card at Innovation Awards

Date: 21-Aug-06 by charles dean

Islington and Camden's ScootAbility Mobility Scooter Loan Scheme has been given the most innovative public sector transport award at the National Transport Awards in July this year.

The scheme is a joint project with Islington and Camden Councils, and provides mobility scooters and powered wheelchairs on a short-term basis to both borough's residents with mobility impairments.

Scootability scooped the coveted prize amidst stiff competition, such as Transport for London's pre-pay Oyster Card.

Cllr Lucy Watt, Executive Member for the Environment, said "Disabled residents tell us that being able to get out and about makes a big difference to their quality of life so we are delighted our scheme is being recognised in this way."

"This award is a massive achievement for the ScootAbility Scheme and is a great example of two councils working together to help those with mobility impairments".

The service plans to build on the success of this scheme which currently services older adults (aged 55 and over), by extending it to younger mobility-impaired residents (aged 16 and over) in Camden and Islington over the coming months.
