It's 'All change!' at Farringdon

Date: 21-Aug-06 by charles dean

The area around Farringdon Station could soon be taking on a new look with the announcement of plans to improve the street environment around the station.

The station area is heavily used by people living and working in the vicinity, tourists visiting some of London's famous attractions, and in the evenings by those using the bars, pubs, clubs and restaurants.

Cllr Lucy Watt, Executive Member for Environment said:

"Farringdon Station is an important gateway into the borough - improving the street environment would benefit the many thousands who use it each day.

"The Farringdon area is also home to a large number of businesses and is an important contributor to the borough's night-time economy. So when consultation starts in September, we'll be canvassing the views of local employers too."

The council has commissioned The Project Centre to design a street improvement scheme for the area around Farringdon Station, centering on Cowcross Street.

Improvements to the streetscape could include new paving, road surfacing, lighting, signage and cycle racks.

A proposed design scheme will be available for public consultation by the middle of September with a final report scheduled for the South Area Planning Committee on 31 October.
