Holloway School in a spin over new bike shed

Date: 09-Aug-06 by charles dean

Pupils from Holloway Secondary School now have a brand new cycle storage unit thanks to Islington Council.

With a storage capacity of up to 40 bikes, the unit is the result of Holloway School student Afzol Ahmed's design who won a competition run by Islington's Road Safety and Special Projects Team.

Last month, Islington Mayor Cllr Jyoti Vaja carried out the opening of the new cycle storage unit and presented new bikes to pupils as a reward for taking part in projects which promote the green objectives of the School Travel Plan (STP).

In order to promote safe cycling, Islington Council's Dr Bike was on hand to carry out bike checks and explain essential maintenance.

Cllr Terry Stacy, deputy leader of Islington Council said:

"The children love the new bike shed and the teachers like the see-through design because you can see who's in there.

We are advising many more schools about adopting greener transport alternatives to the car and we're providing safe cycling courses for under 11s.

Cycling is great fun, keeps kids fit and gives them a valuable sense of independence."

In September 2005, Holloway Secondary School worked on a new project to develop an STP in partnership with Islington Council, Transport for London and the London Gifted and Talented Programme.

The STP aims, through a variety of initiatives, to increase the number of pupils walking, cycling, car-sharing and using public transport on a regular basis to travel to and from school.

The installation of the new cycle storage unit formed just one of many initiatives that are identified in Holloway's STP. The distribution of the new bikes and the opening of the cycle storage unit indicate that Holloway Secondary School is well on the way to achieving its goal of increasing levels of sustainable travel.
