Islington's cleaner and greener credentials were put to the test recently when a call to the council's Environmental Crime Unit was followed up with swift and effective action.
On Friday 4 August, council officers were on the scene within five minutes catching fly-poster 'Darren' from Shepherds Bush red-handed as he put up flyers for a music venue on Holloway Road.
Because fly-posting is criminal damage, the police were called and a fixed penalty fine of £80.00 was given. Posters to the value of £684.00 were seized.
The Environmental Crime Unit is part of the council's Street Management division and has developed from the successful Clean Team programme that has successfully blitzed grot-spots around the borough for the past two years.
The purpose of the unit is to tackle the graffiti and fly-posting. Staff work alongside the newly-formed Area Response Teams and the police helping to make Islington greener, cleaner and safer.
Cllr Lucy Watt, executive member for environment, said:
"We've blitzed street clutter and 'grot spots' up and down the borough at the request of residents and community groups - many of whom have given us positive feedback.
"We're hoping to have the same success with illegal fly-posters - ridding Islington of these envirocriminals improves the street scene for everyone. Fly-posting can be reported to 020 7527 2000."
