Islington Council

Help your local park to bloom

Date: 11-Aug-06 by nicola quinn

St Mary Magdalene Church Garden is the first of the borough's local parks to use compost made from garden and food waste collected by the council from Islington residents. Over nine tonnes of compost has already been spread over flower beds.

Lucy Watt, executive member for environment said: "This is a wonderful scheme, exactly what recycling and reusing is all about. We collected green and kitchen waste in Islington and re-used it as compost in Islington. The more compost we are able to produce the more parks will benefit. So get recycling your kitchen and garden waste and help your local park bloom!"

Last year Islington residents composted over 1,300 tonnes of garden and food waste using the council's doorstep collection schemes and over 450 tonnes of garden waste by using the recycling centre in Hornsey Street.

Ian McLaughlin, Treasurer, Friends of St Mary Magdalene Church Gardens said:" This is an excellent initiative to ensure that locally collected kitchen and garden waste comes back to enhance the gardens for the local community. I hope this will encourage more people to put out garden and food waste for collection"

The garden and food waste is taken to Edmonton where it is turned into compost using an In-vessel composter.

The compost improves the soil and reduces reliance on pesticides to keep weeds down. It also cuts down on landfill and rubbish incineration, which can cause a range of environmental problems. It helps to create a sustainable planet by converting local green waste back into a product that will help more plants and vegetables grow--in Islington's own parks.

A kitchen and green waste collection service is available to all street properties. Green waste can also be taken to the council's Household Re-use and Recycling Centre in Hornsey Street N7.
