Date: 27-Jul-06 by nicola quinn

Thanks to your use of the council's Household Reuse and Recycling Centre in Hornsey Street, the Simon Community has received donations of furniture. Now the charity can refurbish it's property in Malden Road, N1 where they provide accommodation for street homeless people.

Lucy Watt, executive member for environment, said "This scheme is really making a difference and is an excellent example of what can happen to your unwanted items. More and more of you are using the council's recycling and reuse centre which is great news for us all. So, if you have anything in your home that you don't want don't just throw it away let someone else reuse it. All you have to do is bring it to the council's reuse and recycling centre and we will give those useful items a new lease of life just like we have done here."

The council's recycling centre has also provided the Simon Community with blankets and sleeping bags that were distributed to people who were on the streets and had nowhere to sleep during the cold winter months. In addition it has provided items for the Simon Community's volunteers to sell at car boot sales and helped raise vital money toward the charities work.

Tim Nicholls, Director of the Simon Community, said "We are hoping to secure funding to re-open the property at Malden Road as a residential house, providing accommodation for people who are street homeless in London. It can cost a lot of money just to set up a project like this with all the furniture we need, so the donations of furniture from the
recycling centre are an excellent way to save precious funds and help us get this project off the ground. We value this partnership with the council's recycling centre and hope it will continue."

The recycling centre has had over 150,000 visitors since it opened in August 2004 and all furniture that is of good enough quality goes to Restore Community Projects and they pass items to the Simon Community.

The stuff from the Reuse collections goes to Morph or Homestore- different

ends
