Council warning - don't sell short measures

Date: 27-Jul-06 by nicola quinn

A baker has been fined £300 with £200 costs following a council visit to a shop in North Islington.

Thomas the Bakers Ltd of Winchmore Hill supplied La Boulangerie Patisserie at 746 Holloway Road with bread as a part of an ongoing agreement. The premises were visited early in 2006 and a large amount of seriously short weight bread was found. Following advice a further visit was made when Trading Standards Officers discovered 14 seriously short weight loaves out of 64 weighed. The visit earlier in the year had produced 22 inadequate loaves out of 27.

Cllr George Allan, Executive Member for Customer Focus said: "The overwhelming majority of bakers in Islington comply with weights and measures legislation but the message is clear if you don't we will prosecute you."

The law relating to bread weights dates back many centuries but was updated in the 1980s. A small loaf should weigh 400g and a large loaf should weigh 800g. Some of the loaves that were on sale at La Boulangerie Patisserie weighed up to 70g short of the prescribed weight.

The case was of Thomas the Bakers Ltd was heard at Highbury Corner Magistrates' Court on Tuesday 18 July 2006.

Similarly two fruit and veg' sellers have also been found selling products short of the law, where goods were being sold 'by the bowl' with no reference to weight or number and no unit pricing. Each stall was visited five times and given advice but both traders persisted which led to prosecutions at Highbury Corner Magistrates' Court.

Keith John West and Michael Economou were both separately fined and required to pay costs. Michael Economou was fined £300 (£150 for each offence) and £200 costs and Keith West was fined £20 and £20 costs.

Mr West runs a fruit and veg stall outside the Enkel Arms, a public house at 34-36 Seven Sisters Road.

Mr Economou runs a stall on the corner of Salterton Road and Seven Sisters Road.
