A High Court judge today effectively gave the green light to Islington Council's plans for an all-through, Church of England sponsored secondary school on the site of the St Mary Magdalene Primary School on Liverpool Road, Holloway.
A hearing opened last week (19 July) in London's High Court to resolve a Judicial Review brought by local parent Hayley Powers against the independent adjudicator who upheld the legality of the school governors' decision to issue the primary school's closure notice.
Cllr Ursula Woolley, executive member for children and young people said:
"I am delighted for everyone who has worked on this project and especially for the children and their parents who have been looking forward to the new school opening in September 2007.
The judge's decision confirms the proper process was followed in bringing a new Church of England secondary school to the north of the borough.
We're already committed to transforming education in Islington, with more opportunities for each child and first class buildings and facilities for all secondary schools.
I want all Islington parents to be confident they can choose an Islington school for their child."
The new St Mary Magdalene Academy will open in September 2007.
