Islington Council

How would you improve the Nag's Head?

Date: 10-Jul-06 by nicola quinn

What would you do to improve the Nag's Head? That's the question Islington Council is asking local residents and traders this month as it looks to the future of the Nag's Head.

Following the success of the newly redeveloped N1 town centre the council will continue to change the Nag's Head for the better. The results of the consultation will feed into the Nag's Head Town Centre Strategy - a framework for planning decisions that will help shape development in the area for the next 5-10 years.

Improvements already making a difference to the Nag's Head include:

· the appointment of the Nag's Head Area Co-ordinator and the creation of a town centre board
· developing a Shopwatch scheme for the area

· Spotlight on Nag's Head - improving refuse collection and street cleaning in the area and removing redundant telephone boxes and other street furniture
· action to tackle the illegal cigarette trade
· improved CCTV
· installing wayfinder boards (signs that help you find your way)
· Christmas lights in 2005
· introduction of a Safer Neighbourhood Police team
· a dedicated street trading officer for 2006/7
· assistance with training, finding jobs and opening new businesses in the area

Councillor Lucy Watt, executive member for environment said: "We have already made some changes for the better at the Nag's Head. Our new town centre manager and board are working hard to improve the area. We are funding a Safer Neighbourhood Team for a year, we've improved CCTV and we are working with local businesses. We are tackling the probelm of illegal cigarette sellars with numbers falling after a successful crackdown earlier this year. We know there is still more we can do and we want you to get involved. Why not help us shape the future of the Nag's Head?"

From Saturday 8 July to Monday 31 July people can visit the council's exhibition and tell us what improvements and features they'd like to see.

8- 9 July Grafton School market 10am - 2pm
11 and 13 July Nag's Head shopping centre 9.30am-2pm & 12-6pm
14 July Waitrose 9.30 am - 2pm
14 July Odeon Cinema 5-8pm
17-29 July North Library, Manor Gardens Mon/Tues & Thurs-Sat

The council is asking:

· whether the town centre, or parts of it should be a Conservation Area
· whether the balance between shops, housing, entertainment, accommodation and other community facilities is right
· how the centre could be used better in the evenings
· what the covered market brings to the area

Through this the council aims to encourage better shopping, more local jobs, and continued street improvement works, the strategy will also explore whether more evening activity could or should happen in the town centre.

The findings of the consultation will be taken in September to West, East and North Area Committees . The council is also consulting on plans to redevelop Archway.
