Following today's fire at York Way, Islington Council is assisting the emergency services and providing practical support to those affected.
The emergency services have imposed a 24 hour 200 metre exclusion zone around the scene of the fire.
Cllr James Kempton, leader of Islington Council said: "In an emergency such as this, our priority has to be supporting those members of the local community who have had to leave their homes.
We've provided all possible assistance to the emergency services as they have dealt with this incident.
This afternoon I visited the respite centre at Blessed Sacrament to speak to those people affected. I'd like to thank the church and everyone involved including our emergency team, who swung into action very quickly, putting in place well-rehearsed plans.
We will give an update when the emergency services advise us further."
Residents of the York Way estate (Tiber Gardens and Treaty Street) have been evacuated - a respite centre has been set up in Islington at Blessed Sacrament Church, 157 Copenhagen Street, N1. It is unlikely people will be able to return to their homes before tomorrow (Tuesday 27 June).
Kate Greenaway Nursery School, Blessed Sacrament Primary School and Copenhagen Primary Schools have also been evacuated.
Kings Cross mainline train station is closed. Underground services are not affected.
York Way is presently closed in both directions near Goods Way. Diversions are in effect using Wharfedale Road and Copenhagen Street.
