Watch out for extra police pounding the pavements around the Nag's Head town centre in Holloway.
Islington Council is to fund a new Safer Neighbourhood Team of six extra police officers for the Nag's Head town centre. The team is part of a new strategy to stamp out the illegal trading, crime and anti-social behaviour which has blighted the area for years.
Chairman of the Nag's Head Town Centre Management Group, Ian Gault has welcomed the new resource.
"The Nag's Head is a great area and we are pleased that our concerns about safety have been listened too. Having a dedicated police presence in the area helps traders feel safe and encourages more shoppers to come down -- especially if they know that aggressive illegal traders won't harass them."
The new team will follow the traditional safer neighbourhood team model of one police sergeant, two police constables and three police community support officers. They will concentrate solely on local concerns.
Councillor Marisha Ray, executive member for community safety and performance improvement said: "We have seen how well the safer neighbourhood teams are working across the borough and I'm delighted that we are able to fund an additional team for the Nag's Head. We want all areas of Islington to be safe and work closely with Islington police to achieve this goal."
More police in the area builds on the successful campaign earlier this year to highlight the dangers of buying illegal cigarettes. Over 20 illegal traders were arrested as a result and the number of sellers in the area dramatically reduced.
The safer neighbourhood team should be patrolling the area from July 2006.
