Islington and Camden babies had a great time parading their environmentally friendly real cloth nappies at a Real Cloth Nappy Fashion show in Waterlow Park to celebrate Sustainability Week (4 June - 19 June).
The babies walked, crawled and rolled with great enthusiasm as they happily posed for guests spreading the message of how comfortable and cool real nappies are.
Mini model Solomon Francis's proud mother Fiona Roberts: said "I like real cloth nappies because we never run out of them. The council's subsidy allowed me to enjoy a bit of retail therpay and buy some fun designs."
Councillor George Allan, Islington Council's Executive Member for Customer Focus said: "Parents want the best for their babies and many worry about the environment - but have been put off real nappies because they think they are too much hassle or too expensive. Our discount scheme is success because it makes it easier and cheaper to use real nappies than ever before. In it's first years the Islington nappy scheme diverted 65 tonnes of nappy waste from landfill. With more and more Islington babies using real cloth nappies now is the time to contact us and find out more."
Using Real Nappies does makes a real difference to our environment because normal dirty nappies make up about 2% of the UK's waste stream, with eight million nappies being thrown away each day in the UK.
Yet a baby only needs 20-30 real nappies from birth to potty. These can cost as little as £2 each and washing costs are less than people think.
Islington Council offers a £54 discount when you register with the laundry services Nappy Ever After or Number One for Nappies. Or, Islington Council offers £54 cash-back on the first purchase of real nappies.
The event was organised by Islington and Camden Councils.
