Social care experts visited Islington

Date: 09-Jun-06 by margery peddie

Social services expert Dame Denise Platt made a one-of tour of five of Islington's care services on 7 June to see first hand what kind of services disabled children, adults, young people and carers in Islington are getting.

Dame Denise chairs the Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCI), the independent 'watchdog' organisation that registers, inspects and reports on social care services in England.

Accompanied by CSCI Commissioner, Mr John Knight, Dame Denise visited council run centres, a voluntary organisation and a charity that together provide care services and homes for disabled children and adults as well as their families and carers. At the centres, the social care experts met service users and discussed their experiences of care services in Islington.

Dame Denise said: "I wanted to see for myself what the council is doing to support adults and children who need care and support. In particular, I was keen to hear directly from people who use services about their views and experiences."

Gwen Ovshinsky, Director of Adult Social Services is delighted to be singled out by Dame Denise Platt for a visit and Director of Children's Services, Paul Curran is keen for Dame Denise to see some of the good things that are happening for families in Islington.

Last year Islington's social services was awarded two stars by CSCI who noted that the council had made 'significant progress'. Islington's Adult Social Services was also praised for exceeding national targets for the number of older people receiving intensive home care that helps them live independently.
